Here’s a simple trick that works: when taking photographs, set your camera to the highest resolution – to get the best quality print result – for the size of photograph you’d like to print.

Tip: always use the highest resolution on your camera when you take a photograph.

Use the right megapixel camera for size and quality of print required: If you’d like to print your image on A3 or A4 photo paper, for example, you’ll need to use a camera with higher megapixels and set your camera to the highest possible resolution setting:

A3 prints
2592 x1944 pixels – use a 5 megapixel camera on the highest resolution setting

A4 prints
2272 x 1704 pixels – use a 4 megapixel camera on the highest resolution setting

Portrait Photography: How to master the art

There aren’t many good portrait photos of me. Besides the odd couple of times a professional photographer takes charge. Nobody seems to be able to take a good photo of me.

Like most people, I dislike it when the camera is pointed in my direction. I get my camera look – and it isn’t a good look. Saying that, I love taking informal portrait shots of people – and people seem to love the photos I take of them.

So, what have I learnt about taking a good portrait photograph.

1. Be relaxed: carry on talking and interacting naturally with the person you are photographing – to the point that they are not aware of the camera.

2. Get up close: use a good camera to get close-up shots without being “in-your-face”, and if you can get close enough, use a camera with a good zoom lens.

3. Be trigger happy: take loads and loads of photos. Change your angle and capture your subject in various states of animated conversation or thought.

4. Be controversial: build a repertoire of conversation pieces and questions that will help your subject to react and respond to the conversation and not the camera.

5. Be creative: be bold, decisive and inventive when taking portrait photos. Don’t always opt for the standard face-to-camera approach. Tap into the essence of the person, their character and the surroundings.

4 ways to boost the quality of your printed images

The better your digital image, the better the print will be. You can improve the quality of your digital images by following these four simple steps:

Increase your photo resolution
In most cases, the higher the resolution, the better the picture. Most digital cameras offer a choice of settings. For the best printing results, select the maximum photo size and quality offered. For example, 2 megapixels would be suitable to print photos for photo albums, while 3 megapixels would be needed to print calendars or greetings cards, while larger posters would need 5 megapixels or more. The greater the resolution, the better the image quality, clarity and detail.

JPEG format works best for web uploads - TIFF is better for printed images

Choose the correct file format
JPEG file formats, which compress image data, are ideal for sending pictures via email or uploading to the Web. However, if you want to print your images, larger TIFF files will do a better job. Even though it will take up more memory on your card, TIFF images deliver a better print result. Most digital cameras use JPEG format, which loses some detail to save space when storing images. But saving the image in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) won’t compromise image quality. Simply choose ‘File > Save As’ in your image editor and select ‘TIFF’ from the drop-down list.

Enhance your images
Many digital shots can look out of focus when you print them. You can use your image editor’s sharpen tool to emphasize the edges that appear in your photo. Use the ‘Help’ option and search for ‘sharpen’ to locate your program’s tool. Experiment with lighting and colour, remove blemishes, and touch up your photos. Most programs will allow you to add special effects, get rid of red eye, and sharpen your images.
